"At my 49th birthday, my friends found out that I could not read.  That's when one of them called Literacy Volunteers for me.  Literacy Volunteers matched me with my tutor, the best teacher in the world.  We started with ten words a week.  My tutor helped me get my library card and I've checked out 41 books in a year and a half.  This is unbelievable since I had never used a library before.  I also now have the confidence to try new things like writing checks, reading my mail and newspapers.  I can't thank Literacy Volunteers enough for helping me learn all of this."
